I read it 10 or 15 years ago and still remember how much it swept me up. Later I bought a used hardcover, and am glad I did, because my library does not have this book anymore. I am about due to re-read it! Wish it were available as a Kindle e-book so my vision-impaired husband could read it!

Beyond Sing the Woods Trygve Gulbranssen Naomi Walford 9789997513052 Books Reviews

Our neighbors loaned us their copy of "Beyond Sings the Woods" when we were heading out on a long car trip. They said it was beautifully written and we would not be able to put it down. I read the book aloud to my husband as he drove, and did not stop until we arrived at our destination. We had only read Part I. We could not wait to get back into the car to finish reading the book, and still had not finished reading Part II when we returned home.

Thankfully, the copy we had ordered had arrived in the mail, so we each took a copy of the book and finished reading. What a beautiful story of several generations in Norway in the 1800's! We immediately asked our library to search inter-library loan for the sequel to this book, "The Wind From the Mountains." This is definitely a book that belongs in every library! We are so glad to have found it and received our own copy so quickly! Thanks!
This is the English translation of the Norwegian novel by Trygve Gulbranssen. To state a few predictable or cliched things about this book. One it reminds me in many ways of the work of another Norwegian author Knut Hamsun, although I prefer this book to anything by Hamsun that I have read to date. Two, this book is VERY Scandinavian not just in the outward obvious ways, but also in subtle ways that a person that has not lived in a Nordic country probably would not pick up on. In particular to social customs, nuances, mannerisms, the habit many have of talking about people behind each others backs as well as how many of these people will often hold grudges for years on end for seemingly minor offenses to their person. Three, although the level of violence doesn't quite go that extreme in Beyond Sing the Woods I can't help but be reminded of the multitude of Norse and Icelandic Sagas that I have read by this book also.

This novel is set in a somewhat vague time period (I would guess anywhere from 1700 to the 1850's?) in rural Norway. It revolves around one family over more than one generation with an emphasis on the head of the household/family patriarch but goes into a few other directions at times too. The family is supposedly descended from the old time chieftains and behaves in a proud noble way for the most part. Really they were a throw back to the old time Pagan chieftains in many ways, where the leaders were owed something by the people who lived in their lands, but there was also a give and take where they were not exploiters of the land and people but overseers and protectors. Another thing I loved about this book is, as another reviewer mentioned, the vivid descriptions of the Norwegian forests, mountains, sky and nature that are in this book. One scene that really sticks in my mind involves a horse drawn sleigh race through the countryside and forest on a clear crisp winter night. Beautiful writing that really takes you there. But yeah I would highly recomend this book, although its yet another that is out of print and I don't understand why although used copies are available fairly cheap if your patient.
Essential for air mattress's.
I love this book very much. In Czech country religion has been forbiden. In that books I did find many answers for my religion question.
Beautiful story. It was originally written in Norwegian so the translation into English is a bit difficult to read.
I read this book over a year ago, can't remember in which person the story was narrated. Great book. Maybe slow for the average American reader, but I loved the subtleties, character development, relationships, and the landscape of mountainous Norway, the setting for the story.
I cannot praise this novel highly enough. The characters are rich and deep despite the novel being devoid of the intense psychological introversion found often in novels, nowadays. This reflects Gulbranssen's genius; he is able to perfectly craft a character using very, very few words. Every character is known intimately through Gulbranssen's terse, poetic language, and every paragraph contains an entire world descriptive of the time, season, social atmosphere, and natural world surrounding the paragraph.

Moreover, the novel is didactic, and thus a great read for children. It illustrates powerful realities and how both noble and ignoble humans think and act through these realities.

I will be reading this novel to my children. I want them to love it as dearly as I do. This is my holy book, illustrative of everything I need in life to become more human.

Many thanks to Gulbranssen and the Norwegian landscape for bringing us such inspiration!
