What a brilliant idea. I'm fascinated with criminal psychology and have never seen it from the perspective of a victim basically raised in captivity. The book had a great voice and set the place in Scotland without over complicating the language. Outside Sarah Ann Juckes author 9780241330753 Books Reviews
I enjoyed this novel. For a young adult novel, it does a great job of walking the fine line of mature themes, told from a naïve point of view in a sensitive way. It begins with a young girl that we can identify as someone who has been locked away Inside. She has no real concept of Outside, except what she's managed to glean from some fairy tales and the obvious idea that the man who comes in to 'visit' her every week or so must come from somewhere.
As is inevitable, the girl does manage to actually visit the Outside, and the author does a fine job of showing us our world from the viewpoint of someone who has absolutely no frame of reference to guide her. It would be difficult to say anything more without adding spoilers that I think would detract from the story as we get to learn about the world at the same time as our protagonist.
While there are some extremely mature themes, many of the more egregious ones are merely hinted at in a way that the knowledgeable reader will be able to recognise, but it isn't overt. I felt this was a good way to handle these situations.
Definitely recommended.
Outside by Sarah Ann Juckes a five-star read that will give you thought. This is one of those reads that you won’t be able to put down, it will compel you to read until the last page. I don’t know what to say without giving the plot or a twist away. its one I don’t want to spoil for any reader, I know it’s a YA genre but I really hope that it gets read by more than just that genre as it had a great cross over, once you get used to the language and the phrasing used you will get sucked in and start to understand the world you are reading.
*I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
Wow! Well, I could go for the easy comparison here and cite the similarities between the plot here and Room (Emma Donoghue), but that would be selling Outside short.
Sarah Ann Juckes has taken the premise of a child growing up trapped and isolated and given it a fresh voice of its own… Ele’s voice.
Ele is our main character and she is fierce and brave and scared and determined and so very strong. Her life is devastatingly bleak and yet she faces it; more than faces it, she faces it down!
I will warn that the whole book is pretty much trigger after trigger. There is child abuse and neglect, sexual assault, physical violence. No gratuitous details are given, but the peripheral details – the smells and sounds, hints and hesitations – paint a clearer picture than anything graphic could. I felt nauseous and rage-filled from the first few pages to the end.
There are plenty of mysteries to solve along with Ele as she attempts to improve her situation. Whilst she tries to figure out whether Outside exists and how she would vanquish a dragon, the reader ponders who (or what) the Others may be, how Ele ended up there, and how she can possibly get (and stay) away.
The ending was perfect. I didn’t see what was coming, and thought the author captured a nice balance of revealing and holding back; sadness and hope.
If you can stomach a tough and heartbreaking story, expertly told, with a compelling and memorable narrator, then Outside is for you. Bring tissues and a pillow to punch.
The Proof of the Outside – number one Books.
Books are truth and they all show the Inside and the Outside. Outside is trees and gingerbread houses. Inside is walls.
We got three books. The Alphabet Book. An Encyclopaedia of British Trees. My First Book of Fairy Stories.
Books are my windows. They show me everything I need to know to be an Outside Person, from killing Dragons to growing beanstalks. It’d be awful dark Inside without no books.

Review by Steph Warren of Bookshine and Readbows blog
Ele lives Inside a Tower with the Others and collects Proofs of the Outside. She dreams of being an Outside Person instead of an Other but knows there are Dragons, Giants and Ogres Outside. Inside is anything but a fairytale because of Him but Inside is all she knows.
Ele is one of those girls whose story and spirit will super glue themselves inside your mind. Her resilience and spunk under unimaginable circumstances inspire me to want to be as brave and capable of facing my fears as she did hers. Her love of reading endeared her to me and, like ‘Matilda’ before her, she reinforced my belief that with books and your imagination you can endure and ultimately overcome any adversity.
Her voice, which I originally found disconcerting and disorienting, became easier to read the more I got to know her. Having only known Inside she doesn’t speak like any other character I’ve read. I loved her descriptions of objects that you and I take for granted and sometimes it took me a while to figure out what it was that she was experiencing.
Maybe it’s because I’ve read so much fiction and nonfiction with similar themes or because I try to focus on all of the details in books I plan on reviewing but I picked up on clues of some potential surprises early on. I was disappointed that there were no big revelations for me but from what I can tell based on early reviews I’m an anomaly.
Free Bonus Short Story! If you sign up to join Sarah’s Reader’s Club on her website you’ll be emailed ‘Inside’. It’s available in MOBI, ePub and PDF formats. It accompanies ‘Outside’ and is really, really good, but I cannot stress this enough - please read ‘Outside’ first or you’ll be in Spoiler World before you know it. I’m not sure if there’s an expiry date on this offer but the link worked at the time I posted this review.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Children’s UK for the opportunity to read this book. Content warnings are included in my Goodreads review.
