Till Dawn Tames the Night Meagan McKinney 9780440208709 Books

This is the first Meagan McKinney book I've read but I don't think I will be reading others by this author. I generally like the older books because the author puts more effort into the scene setting and plot and uses more standard English. The tradeoff is characterization of the hero/heroine, with the hero being more abusive and the heroine more of a damsel in distress and willing to take the abuse. This book is no exception. I like the writing but there's way too much internal monolog on the part of the heroine. Someone asks her a question or she's thinking about what to do and before she says/does anything, there is about a half to full page of her musings. The amount of time it takes for her to sort things out would stymie any conversation or forfeit emergency situation. These musings block the momentum of the plot. Majority of the story is from the heroine's POV and we don't really get any insight to the progress of the hero's thoughts. The heroine is not a particularly memorable character - she's willing to trade barbs with the hero but when push comes to shove, she's a pushover - she does quite a bit of crying/sobbing, screaming/shrieking, moaning, blushing and so forth. The hero seems more interesting and his backstory doesn't really unfold until quite a bit into the story. There's a mystery involving an emerald and some mysterious mumbo/jumbo but the mystery takes a back burner to the development (or not) of the H/h relationship. The author also seems to have difficulty explaining primogeniture regarding the evil half brother's inheritance of the title since hero and villain are related only through the maternal side.
I would have ranked this book higher if 1) there's less internal monolog; 2) better heroine.

Till Dawn Tames the Night Meagan McKinney 9780440208709 Books Reviews

3.5 stars I’m sure I would have enjoyed this more had I read it in the late ‘90s. Forced seduction is such a hot-button issue that it’s difficult for the reader to place herself in the timing and setting of Till Dawn Tames the Night and not gave their opinions be colored by today’s events. It’s truly unfair to the book and the author.

While I liked the adventures and the development of the love between the main characters, I didn’t much like the characterization of Aurora. She seemed a bit silly and annoying. Vashon is your typical alpha male, very forceful and slow to love.

What I liked best is the presence of diverse characters. I believe the author is ahead of her time in that aspect of storytelling.

There was humor and loads of action. Overall, a good book.
THE STORY Aurora Dayne, an orphan, decides the leave the only home she has ever known to find a place for herself in Jamaica. What she doesn't know is that she has been tricked into participating in her own kidnapping. Vashon is searching for the Star of Aran, a legendary treasure. He needs Aurora, the daughter of the thief who stole it, to help him locate it. Vashon was ripped from his aristocratic life by his murderous half-brother who sold Vashon into slavery to steal his rightful title. Now Vashon is after revenge.

OPINION This book, first published in the early 1990s, brings to mind books written in the decades just prior. There is the strong, demanding alpha hero and the tremulous virgin who first resists and then is determined to change her man into a caring, loving hero. There are pirates and treasures and voyages to the New World. In addition, the hero is the actual heir to a title that was stolen from him. I liked this book but I didn't love it. For me, the book didn't have the emotional power of some similar books. While I loved the hero, the heroine was annoying to me and so I never bought into the romance. What annoyed me most was that I spent most of the book saying "just give the man the information he wants about the jewel" and I didn't really accept Aurora's reasons for not doing so. It diminished my enjoyment somewhat, but I did like the book overall.

WORTH MENTIONING This book has many of the elements of the bodice ripper romances of the 1970s and 1980s, but the consent issues are less abrupt here. Aurora resists Vashon, but eventually consents in their first encounter and doesn't herself consider it rape. However, for those concerned with consent, this book is a bit murky and troubling on the issue.

FINAL DECISION I liked this book and recommend it as a somewhat kinder, gentler version of the bodice ripper romances of old.

CONNECTED BOOKS This is a standalone book.

STAR RATING I give this book 4 stars.
This book had a sweetness to it despite its rough areas. Vashon is in appearance the brutal, damaged and devastatingly handsome pirate. While his prisoner is feisty and in this case overly righteous in her piousness. There are too many parts where the heroine Aurora makes very obvious stupid decisions which made me wonder if she was all there. In the end love over came all odds and there were lots. This book has a few sex scenes they are not totally descriptive but won't leave you wanting either. Great kisses though.
I enjoyed reading this book but unfortunately have to admit that I didn't care for the final third of it.
I've read a couple of books in the past that had me wondering what happened in the end. It almost seems like the author couldn't decide on a proper ending or grew tired of the story. The main problem for me is that the characters changed so suddenly, the hero's in particular.

Once that had happened, the story progressed to a proper ending swiftly... after slowly building up to the villainous fight for two thirds of the book. So, this left me quite dissatisfied and disappointed. I mean, there's really nothing wrong There's a HEA, good prevails, evil doesn't.
It just.... didn't work for the characters, IMO.

So overall a very enjoyable story, definitely worth reading but a somewhat sloppy ending.
