I am in love with Evan Masen. Dreamy sigh... The book's motto "No bond is stronger than the ones you’ll bleed for." Evan Masen is a 20-year old NHL hockey star. Granted, I'm not a hockey fan and a lot of the book is centered around hockey stuff, but it lets you experience the bond of hockey men and why they are so crazy passionate about their sport. On his way home from his Chicago Blackhawks game, Evan hears something down an alley. He is completely taken aback to find a tiny 17-year old girl, brutally raped and beaten to within an inch of her life. Evan can't forget the blood-stained snow. Evan can't fathom how anyone could do this to a woman, so scoops her near-lifeless, bleeding tiny body up in his arms, hails a cab and rushes her to the hospital. Evan learns her name is Ami Sutton, and stays by her side for weeks until she wakes up from a coma. He continually talks to her in the hospital, getting prolonged visitation since he's a home-town Chicago sports star that everyone knows. He doesn't even know her, yet he can't tear himself away. Hockey has always been his life, but suddenly, Ami has gotten into him and he can't hold back the protectiveness he feels toward her. THAT is what got me on this book. Evan is a true manly man... he'll do anything for those he loves, and it's obvious he fell for Amy the minute she opened her eyes. But who could do such a horrific thing to a woman? Sometimes your enemies are closer than you think. I absolutely adored the way Ami and Evan's relationship grew, and how completely up front they were with each other - no crazy head games, just honesty in a scary world. Plenty of sexual tension as well Loved this, would recommend!

I haven't read anything by Shey Stahl before, but the premise of this book sounded good, I like hockey (and sports romances in general), and her books seem to be raved about, so I figured I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed, mainly because the editing was quite bad. I enjoyed the story, and I liked the characters, but the continuity errors drove me insane. These days, grammar errors are to be expected in self-pubbed books, so I try not to be too tough about them. This one had a fair number, but it was about average for a self-pub. The biggest editing problem with this book was that there were numerous general storyline and timeline errors. The most egregious example was near the end of the book, when a police detective from Chicago shows up in the San Jose, CA hospital where the hero was taken after a fight. The problem is that he shows up AN HOUR OR TWO after he was called. Having flown from the Bay Area to Chicago numerous times, I can guarantee you that it takes 4 hours of actual flying time, not even counting the extra hour or two to get to the airport. That's such an obvious error that I just can't imagine why it was missed, and it certainly wasn't the only one. In addition to these problems, the hockey action was very confusing, hard to follow, and inaccurate in some cases. I think this author has talent, but until she is willing to get some real editing, I think I'll pass on any further books by her.
I was quite surprised by this book. First off, it is not really a novella – it’s a full length book. Secondly, it was what I had hoped for when reading hockey romance. Not a focus on sex, but a focus on relationships and the game. I had never read anything by Ms. Stahl before, but I will be looking into more of her work.

The story follows Evan and Ami. Evan is a 20/21 year old professional hockey player for the Chicago Blackhawks. Ami is a 17/18 year old orphan who Evan found almost dead from a brutal rape. Evan feels drawn to her and doesn’t leave her side during her recovery. Ami is drawn to him when she awakes from her coma. The begin a friendship and a deep connection grows between them throughout the story. I was fascinated by how the author portrayed Ami’s rape from Evan’s viewpoint. Usually you just read about the victim and all she is dealing with, but not here. It is how Evan handles the emotional pitfalls he feels as her friend and lover. Ami doesn’t remember much of her attack, so most of the memory comes from Evan. Throughout the story, Evan is constantly looking for the attacker because not knowing just rips him apart. They eventually find the guy, and there is more emotional upheaval at his arrest.

I loved the deep emotional quality of the book. Every character is thoroughly fleshed out and has a personality. You get to meet Evan’s family (who are from Pittsburgh by the way, my hometown – Go Pens!) and several teammates. You also meet Callie, a lively woman who tends to sleep with everyone on the team, but becomes a great friend to Ami. You read mainly from Evan’s point of view, but there is a lot of Ami in there as well. I wasn’t super drawn to Ami, but she is a lovable character and solid. I preferred Evan and Callie, they seemed more animated and fascinating.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves hockey. It is not a lighthearted romance by any means, so if that’s what you’re looking for don’t read this one. However, if you are looking for a well-developed story with a strong emotional pull and intricate characters, this is a good book.
